In 1974 Bell announced its intention of developing the Model 222, described as the first commercial light twin-engined helicopter to be built in the USA. The first prototype flew on 13 August 1976. Deliveries of production aircraft were planned to begin in 1979. Standard accommodation is for a pilot and seven passengers, although a high-density ten-seat layout is available. The streamlined configuration of the helicopter is enhanced by the hydraulically retractable tricycle-type landing gear.
